Description
With canes up to 7 inches in diameter and a height up to 75 feet, ‘Moso’ is the largest temperate bamboo on the planet – a true giant among the species!
The contrast between its extremely large canes and its tiny delicate leaves make Moso an especially attractive, highly collectible species. Moso is a fast grower that you can expect to reach 70 feet or more in height in USDA 7 and further south, and about 30 to 35 feet tall in Zone 6. One of the most useful bamboos in China where its new shoots are used for food and its canes for timber, paper, plywood, flooring and many other things. Moso Bamboo loves the sun but will also grow in part shade and is hardy to 0 to -5°F.

Growing Preferences
Moso Bamboo is easy to grow in any average, well-drained but moist soil and full to mostly sun. During the first growing season after planting, water as needed to keep soil around the plants moist, but not soggy or wet. When established, Moso Bamboo is drought tolerant however, will appreciate an occasional deep soaking if the leaves begin to curl from drought stress.
How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors
Moso is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year. When they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.

I’ve been looking for giant bamboo for quite some time, and everybody offers seeds, which I tried, and didn’t grow at all, I found Wilson brothers online and thought I would give them a try since they’re selling live plants. I was worried because I live on the other side of the country from them and sometimes live plants don’t do well in the long transport, but they got here in under three days And the way it was packaged was genius. They had the planter of the plant stapled to the bottom of the box so it would not shift around,
I received two giant bamboo plants, they were babies and we’re not cut off at the top and they were in beautiful condition. When I remove them from the planter, I also noticed there was two or three shoots already starting.
I planted them in the recommended soil, look on their website they have instructions and best soil, and I’ve been faithfully watering them and they’re doing so good not a lot of growth but it’s the first year and we’re past the middle part of summer already so I wasn’t expecting a lot of growth This year but long story short I’m very happy with my purchase, the plants are beautiful and healthy. It came in a large planter with moist soil.
If you’re looking for giant bamboo, I think you found the right place. Trust me I’ve spent probably six weeks looking for giant bamboo, I even bought one off of Facebook marketplace, but it ended up being a scam so watch yourself there, Wilson brothers gardens did a great job I highly recommend them.
